CPT is looking for proposals for the New Work Development Series

A core value of Cleveland Public Theatre is to support and nurture the development of new works of diverse style, discipline, and creative processes by Northeast Ohio artists. CPT has three development series that we will continue in our 13/14 Season; Springboard, Leap/Conceive and Big Box. Occurring throughout the season, each development series will focus on different aspects of the development process and needs of individual artists.

For next season, we have combined the proposal process for all of our 13/14 development series. Rather than submit separate applications for all three series, as in years past, artists are welcome to apply for one, two or all of CPT's development in one submission. Our goal in combining the proposal process is to encourage artists to evaluate the current state of their project and select the series, or multiple series, that will best support the growth of their project throughout CPT's 13/14 Season.

Application Deadline is Wednesday, May 1, 2013

Program Descriptions

Springboard (October 2013) seeks to nurture the growth of emerging and established directors, support the development of new scripts, and act as a catalyst for forming and deepening relationships between playwrights and directors. Springboard will invite the audience to play a part in the process through publicly performed stage readings and post-show discussions.

Directors and playwrights will work together to cast and develop the reading. Each will receive a very small stipend. CPT will provide limited rehearsal space, and the staged readings will be presented in October 2013.

Springboard is not about completed works, but it is about seeking excellence, creating meaningful connections, and taking risks.

Leap/Conceive (Late October through mid-November 2013) gives artists the opportunity to develop and showcase short segments of larger works in-progress nearing readiness for a production. It is about trying new ideas and sharing work in an open forum. Leap/Conceive is open for diverse kinds of performance of multiple disciplines, created in traditional and non-traditional processes.

Big Box (February - March 2014) is the centerpiece of our 13-14 season. Big Box offers artists or groups the opportunity to self-produce their own works of theatre, dance, performance art, music, or genre defying performances. Big Box is about whatever the artist wants to focus on. We open the doors and let the artist experiment, charting their own course, making their own decisions and taking their own risks.

Big Box gives artists the opportunity to self-produce new work. While CPT offers organizational guidance through strict deadlines and clear deliverables, artists are fully responsible for producing the work.

Big Box is not about huge production values. It's about the work. The artist shouldn't get too caught up in elaborate plans because they don't have much time in the space. But don't confuse minimalism and resourcefulness with lack of style and quality.
