Cleveland Public Theatre Partners With CIFF!
Cleveland Public Theatre is proud to be a community partner in the presentation of TRUST: SECOND ACTS IN YOUNG LIVES, a powerful documentary selected for screening at the 35th Cleveland International Film Festival.
TRUST explores the incredible impact of theatre on the lives of urban teens. CPT is proud to take part in generating awareness of this film as its Student Theatre Enrichment Program (STEP) for Cleveland teens is similar to the Chicago-based program featured in the film, The Albany Park Theatre Project (APTP). Both programs work with participants with little or no previous theater experience to create powerful and original plays for their communities.
TRUST is a story that should not have to be told. At age twelve, Marlin was raped by two men in the bathroom of her grandmother's church in Honduras. She told no one. Two years later, she immigrated with her older brother Carlos to live with their mother in Chicago, where Carlos repeatedly raped her. She didn't resist - she felt she'd already lost everything - but keeping those secrets weighed heavily on her and she drank, took drugs, cut herself, ran away from home and attempted suicide. Her mother committed Marlin to a psychiatric hospital, where she spent nearly 200 nights. Finally she confided her secrets to a counselor who helped her and recommended APTP, a neighborhood teen theater company that creates original plays from members' real life stories.
"This film provides access to the creative process of a diverse group of teens and their artist mentors as they create a moving and beautiful play. Those who work with teens long-term in any capacity will recognize the joy and challenges of this kind of in-depth work" says CPT Education Director Chris Seibert.
TRUST is the third in a thematic trilogy about the transformative power of art by veteran independent filmmakers Nancy Kelly and Kenji Yamamoto.
The film will be screened twice during the festival:
Friday, April 1 at 6:50 p.m.
Saturday, April 2 at 2:10 p.m.
Tower City Center
230 West Huron Road
A panel discussion will take place after the Friday showing.
