Cleveland Public Theatre presents FEVER/DREAM April 7 - 23.
FEVER/DREAM is a razor-sharp comic reinvention of Spanish playwright Pedro de la Barca's 17th century classic, Life is a Dream, set in contemporary Corporate America. In two fast paced acts the audience meets Segis, the son of a Wall Street titan who has spent most of his life literally chained to a customer service desk in the basement of the family business. Suddenly his father, besieged by guilt and contemplating the future of his company, decides to make Segis CEO, a position for which he is completely unprepared. Segis' reign quickly derails when he absurdly takes business metaphors like "bulldoze the competition" and "employees on a tight leash" to far with hilarious and unexpected results that change his life forever.
Written by Sheila Callaghan and directed by CPT Associate Artistic Director Beth Wood, the Cleveland production is the Midwest premiere of FEVER/DREAM. Previously, the show was staged in 2009 at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, DC. The production earned rave reviews from Variety which noted "[Callaghan] has a keen eye for the outlandish" and Metro Weekly heralded her as "the purveyor of top-shelf American wit."
"Callaghan's fresh and exciting voice turns expectations upside down in witty and beautiful language. Amid the snappy dialogue and intense situations there is a profound poetry we think will really resonate with Cleveland audiences," says Raymond Bobgan, executive artistic director of CPT.
Callaghan is an accomplished playwright with plays produced and developed by Soho Repertory Theatre, Playwrights Horizons and South Coast Repertory. She is also the story editor on the award winning Showtime Networks series "United States of Tara." Callaghan has taught playwriting at Columbia University, The University of Rochester, Florida State and is currently on the MFA in creative writing faculty at Spaulding University in Louisville, KY.
Wood is an actor and director whose additional CPT directing credits include BOOM by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb and Why Torture is Wrong and the People Who Love Them by Christopher Durang. She was named "Best Director of a Comedy" in 2008 for BOOM by Rave & Pan's "Best of Cleveland Theatre Awards." Wood has also appeared in numerous CPT productions including, but not limited to, Open Mind Firmament, Pulp and Our Town.
"FEVER/DREAM, with all of its layered nuances, is masterfully brought to life under the direction of Beth Wood," says Bobgan. "She a great example of CPT's commitment to artist development and this production shines with her unique gifts as a director."
