Week #2: Ohio Dance Theatre and Cleveland Dance Exchange (CDX)
Double Bill
Ohio Dance Theatre
Blood Stripe
Ohio Dance Theatre will present the premiere of Blood Stripe, inspired by the story of an OIF/OEF Marine and his family and in honor of veterans suffering from PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Also on the program, Construct is a densely layered solo work partly inspired by Susan Sontag’s monograph “Illness as Metaphor.”
Ohio Dance Theatre is a professional ballet-based contemporary dance company that presents works with a strong theatrical element. Since its inception, the company has stretched the limits of dance by including actors, musicians and singers in many of its productions. The critically acclaimed ODT repertoire features a wide range of style from powerful, thought-provoking pieces to lighter works, which combine athleticism and lyricism. Under the direction of its founder, Artistic Director Denise Gula, Ohio Dance Theatre has provided artistic excellence in the field of dance to Northeastern Ohio since the spring of 1992 when it received a generous seed grant from the Nord Family Foundation.
Cleveland Dance Exchange (CDX)
Top 10
Ten Cleveland choreographers. Ten original dance works. Ten Billboard Hot 100 hits. Which hits? You choose. Audience members will vote to determine which songs will be played each night. 1960s? 1980s? 2000s? You decide.
Cleveland Dance Exchange is a collective of dance artists from Cleveland and the surrounding communities. CDX was founded in the summer of 2013 with the goal of strengthening Cleveland’s dance community by providing a platform for established and emerging performers and artists to collaborate, exchange ideas, and share their work. Unlike a traditional dance company comprised of dancers hired to fulfill a singular artistic goal, CDX collaborators come together for project-based works. CDX enjoyed a premiere performance at Cleveland Public Theatre’s annual “Pandemonium” benefit quickly followed by an invitation to perform at the OhioDance Festival in Ada OH. In July 2014, CDX received critical acclaim at the San Diego International Fringe Festival for the production “Burning on the River,” which included works by four Cleveland-area choreographers.
