About the play…

La Gringa is about a young woman’s search for her identity. Maria Elena Garcia goes to visit her family in Puerto Rico during the Christmas holidays and arrives with plans to connect with her homeland. Once in Puerto Rico, she realizes that the majority of the Puerto Ricans on the island consider her an American—a gringa. So if she is a Puerto Rican in the United States and an American in Puerto Rico, where does she belong? Maria wrestles to find belonging in her many homes and comes to learn that her identity is self-defined and found in her heart.

María Elena García va a visitar a su familia en Puerto Rico durante las vacaciones de navidad y llega con planes de conectar con su tierra. Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) is Hiring Lead Teaching Artists to Direct Original Brick City Theatre Productions for Winter/Spring 2019

Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) is seeking exceptional Teaching Artists for its celebrated Brick City Theatre. Artists with experience in theatre creation and/or spoken word performance are welcome to apply.

The Lead Teaching Artist position has the following core areas of responsibility:

  • Lead Creation of Original Performance based in the artist’s primary discipline and area of mastery, inspired by Black History;
  • Nurture, develop, and uplift youth voices while celebrating CMHA community;
  • Create and implement session curriculum, daily class plans, and voice reports;
  • Collaborate with CPT Education Staff and other professional artists to lead development of original performance material.

Lead Teaching Artist will also support other administrative aspects of program delivery including: participant recruitment, management, and evaluation; and development of program partner relationships

Description of Position

The Technical Director reports to the Associate Artistic Director/Director of Production as a year-round, salaried, staff position working well over 40 hours a week. Salary is competitive based on comparable theatres nationally and is commensurate with experience. Some benefits included.

The Technical Director manages and implements all technical aspects of productions except costumes for CPT’s season of full productions (8-12); four developmental series; Pandemonium (a massive annual event); Station Hope (a one-day social justice festival); as well as other artistic projects and productions. CPT programs in two theatres and embraces the opportunity to produce theatre in nontraditional spaces. The TD, along with their direct reporting Master Carpenter, handles all builds, lighting, video, and sound installations, with only occasional additional over-hire.

DanceWorks 2019

Deadline for submissions is October 29, 2018.

DanceWorks 2019 is an important part of Cleveland Public Theatre’s 2018/2019 Season. DanceWorks offers Northeast Ohio dance companies and choreographers the opportunity to have world premiere works presented in a series with other local dance companies.

Through a submission process, CPT hopes to select 4 – 6 local dance companies to be part of DanceWorks 2019 in the Gordon Square Theatre. DanceWorks 2019 will take place over 5 weeks, May 13 – June 15.

We are accepting submissions for three weeks: May 27 – June 1, June 3 – June 8, and June 10 – 15. (Verb Ballets will perform in DanceWorks May 16 – 18, and Inlet Dance Theatre will perform in DanceWorks May 23 – 25.) Read More ›

Job Announcement: Paid Bartending Position at Cleveland Public Theatre

Cleveland Public Theatre is currently looking for Bartenders for our 2019/2020 season. CPT bartenders are passionate about the arts, about Cleveland, and about positive change in their community. Beyond being responsible for selling refreshments to our patrons, our bartenders are expected to be knowledgeable about Cleveland Public Theatre, our performances and programs, and our neighborhood, the Gordon Square Arts District. Bartending and serving experience are preferred.

Hours will depend on production schedules, but will typically involve Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Monday evenings for approximately 4-6 hours per night with some shows having Sunday and Wednesday performances. ANNOUNCEMENT
Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) is proud to announce the launch of Cleveland Act Now youth theatre program onsite at CPT. The fall session is geared for youth ages 10–14 years old and the program is offered at no cost. Enrollment is by audition. There will be three open audition calls for participation in the program. Youth who have successfully participated in previous sessions are guaranteed placement in the program. All youth must participate in an audition to be eligible for the program. Enrollment is capped at 20 participants.

Auditions are by appointment only and will be scheduled in 1 hour increments. Actors do not need to prepare a monologue. Actors will be given scenes to read.
