Travesty Dance Group- SoloSolo
Travesty Dance Group presents “SoloSolo,” an evening of new dance and live music. Artistic Director Kimberly Karpanty has choreographed new contemporary dance solos for herself and four TDG artists, each accompanied in performance by a live musician. Commissioned and contemporary scores for solo piano, French horn (Radek Baborak), cello (Zoe Keating), percussion and voice (Chuck Richie) will be played by local and nationally recognized performers including Neil Chastain and Claudia Howard Queen.
Travesty Dance Group (TDG) was conceived to support and produce the creative projects of its founding members, Kimberly Karpanty (Cleveland), Rebecca Malcolm-Naib (Philadelphia) and Karen Stokes (Houston). Enriched by collaborative process, Travesty Dance Group seeks to bring diverse original dance work to a variety of communities. The founders believe in dance as a basic human art, embracing both the complexities of contemporary society and the life affirming essence of movement. The fundamental hope of Travesty Dance Group is to create dance that rises above travesty to inspire and enlighten.
TDG debuted at Case Western Reserve University’s Mather Dance Center in May 1997 and has since presented work in Akron (Weathervane Community Playhouse), Cleveland, Houston, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Seattle and abroad in Canada and Sweden. In 2010 the co-founders decided to pursue separate missions; Stokes created a sister company in Houston, Karen Stokes Dance, and Malcolm-Naib serves as an advisor for both groups. TDG is now an Ohio not-for-profit dance company under the sole direction of Kim Karpanty.
