Week #3: April 24 – 26 (double bill)

Antaeus Dance AND Shen & Bones Performance Group

Antaeus Dance- Events leading Up to My Death & Let My Hero In

Antaeus Dance plumbs the depths with two dramatic premieres. Director Joan Meggitt and company member Heather Koniz present intimate danceworks for dancers Jessica Hodges, Koniz, Shannon Sefcik and Rhian Virostko. Both premieres feather new music by Cleveland composer Greg D’Alessio. Meggitt’s Events “Leading Up to My Death” is a metaphor for a persons’ undoing, moving from frenetic to the quiet beneath of a set that is suspended above the dance floor. “Let My Hero In”, by Koniz, is an intimate dive into the world of addiction, depicting both the inner struggle and the outward consequences.

Antaeus Dance has brought the work of more than 50 choreographers, dance artists, composers, visual artists and film-makers to stages in Cleveland and beyond. Antaeus Dance’s work is transformative, reaching beyond the traditional repertory concert to fulfill a larger vision, exploring the intersection of individual experience and collective expression. The Company teaches and rehearses in Cleveland’s historic Tremont neighborhood in Pilgrim Congregational Church. Antaeus Dance is also in residence at Allegheny College, where they hold the annual Allegheny Summer Dance Intensive as well as an annual fall residency.

Shen & Bones Performance GroupShen & Bones Performance Group- Betweens

“Betweens” implies space, but more specifically, the space that completes the whole, which in the Japanese culture is referred to as “Ma”. “Ma” is what takes place in the imagination of the viewers who are experiencing the compositional elements of each of the eight distinct dances in the program.

Shen & Bones Performance Group, based in Erie, Pennsylvania, presents striking, visceral and theatrical works that blend the contemporary Japanese dance form Butoh with western contemporary dance styles. Butoh is known for its raw physicality, meditative movement and surrealist imagery. Shen & Bones dances veer toward the avant garde, combining intricate choreography with improvisation and extreme physicality with intense stillness. From evening-length concerts to site-specific performances, the repertoire contains works of “quiet introspection, raw power, evocative imagery and dark themes,” says Steve Sucato, national dance writer/critic.

Since 1999, audiences throughout the region have enjoyed Shen & Bones performances in a variety of settings such as theaters, galleries, outdoor areas, educational and social venues as well as other sites. In addition to conducting regular performances and residencies throughout Pennsylvania and Western NY, the company has been presented at the Galapagos Art Space in New York City, the D.C. Arts Center in Washington D.C., the BeBe Theater in Asheville, N.C., and Links Hall and the Spareroom Performance Space in Chicago. In 2007, Shen & Bones Performance Group was selected for inclusion in the Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour (PennPAT) Roster. The company has been the recipient of several Pennsylvania Council on the Arts grants as well as a Schuster Arts grant from Gannon University. In Feburary 2014, the company was produced by the LakeArts Foundation for performances at the Erie Art Museum, in a collaboration with NYC sculptor Roland Gebhardt and Louis Nicolia of the Erie Philharmonic.
