Cleveland Public Theatre’s Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan announces the 2012 – 2013 season: REMARKABLE.
Cleveland Public Theatre is the place for original, adventurous and relevant works of performance. The 2012-2013 Season: REMARKABLE delivers on CPT’s mission by including seven world premiere productions five by Northeast Ohio artists, and a host of regional premieres.
“In the world of visual art you can go to some of the most conservative museums in the country and see a huge variety of aesthetics and styles but in theatre the choices are minimal,” says Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan. “Even with the wealth of theatres in Cleveland, most of the offerings are quite limited in style and aesthetics and speak to a small segment of society. CPT’s role is to explore and expose adventurous and diverse work that adds choice to our community and enlivens the scene. This season does just that-with world and regional premieres that will delight, provoke, and engage. These shows are remarkable and will get audiences talking (and tweeting). People will want to say ‘I was there; I saw that.'”
With this season, CPT embarks on an ambitious multi-performance project to address issues of sustainability: The Elements Cycle. The cycle which is planned for the next three seasons, involves creating and producing five new performances. The first four shows focus on each of the elements Water, Earth, Fire and Air, and a fifth show which bridges them all together. Source material drawn from myths, literature, science, sociology and ecology provides a backdrop for the imagery, poetry and music in the performances and tells compelling stories about the relationship between humanity and the environment.
Though at the forefront of a national movement of new play creation, CPT keeps it local by nurturing new plays and encouraging Northeast Ohio artists to create work of significance. CPT’s Big Box offers seven weeks of world premiere workshop productions by Northeast Ohio artists; Springboard, offers staged readings of brand new plays; Leap/Conceive presents segments of work-in-progress in a showcase setting; and The Dark Room offers playwrights, directors, actors, and audience to get in on the fun, in a casual open-mic atmosphere where new scripts take center stage.
Partnerships contribute to the diversity of the season with a bold coproductions. CPT is partnering with Conni’s Avant Garde Restaurant to create a new show made by the artists of the Restaurant and local actors. CPT is coproducing a new play with North American Cultural Laboratory (NY) featuring Brett Keyser, who was last seen in CPT’s hit production of Glen Berger’s Darwinii. The season also features collaborations with Oberlin College, Theatre Ninjas, and Opera Per Tutti.
