Let's get to know the folks behind this weekend's "The Light of Kinara: A Kwanzaa Celebration." Join us for this spotlight on Djapo Cultural Arts Institute Artistic Directors, Talise A. Campbell and Weedie Braimah.Campbell is a dancer, choreographer, director, and Visiting Assistant Professor of Africana Studies and Dance at Oberlin College. She creates multi-disciplinary and socially engaging dance for theater, screen, stage, and the public space. In her decade as the Executive Founding Artistic Director and Choreographer of Djapo Cultural Arts Institute, she has amassed an extensive repertoire of performances, workshops, lectures, and residencies that has reached thousands of people. She has presented her work internationally as well, through annual travels to destinations like West Africa, South America, the United Kingdom, Cuba, and the Caribbean Islands.Braimah is Djapo's Musical Director. His titles include djembist, composer, producer and folklorist, and he comes from a long lineage of drummers. This includes his mother, Ann Morris, a respected jazz drummer and his father, Oscar Sulley Braimah, a world-renowned composer and master drummer. In addition to presenting music of the African diaspora with his own band, Weedie Braimah & The Hands of Time, he has collaborated with such luminaries as Baaba Maal, Trombone Shorty, Pedrito Martinez, and Terrace Martin. Braimah has been a performer, teacher, and preserver of African culture for over 30 years. Rather than simply basking in his achievements, he continues to peruse new musical crossings every day."The Light of Kinara" is the latest entry in this powerhouse duo's body of work, and as you can see, audiences will be in the most capable hands as they bear witness to rituals celebrating Kwanzaa and beyond. As you can see, a Djapo Cultural Arts Institute performance is a feast for the eyes and ears. "The Light of Kinara: A Kwanzaa Celebration" starts Thursday, and we can't wait to see the combination of singing, music, dance, spoken word, colorful costumes, and dynamic staging that Djapo has put together to celebrate this African-American holiday and the light within us all.The celebration begins at 6:30pm with a vendor market, carolers and storytelling.
