About the play…

En el Tiempo de las Mariposas is a fictionalized account of the courageous Mirabal sisters from the Dominican Republic. The sisters inspired resistance cells throughout the country against the dictatorial regime of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The “butterflies,” their secret code name, were brutally murdered by the regime in 1960. En el Tiempo de las Mariposas paints a visual dreamscape of the activist sisters’ interior lives, the beauty and ferocity of the natural world and the music heard on the radio of the time. Performed in Spanish with English supertitles. Regional Premiere.

Sobre La obra del teatro…

En el Tiempo de las Mariposas es una novela que relata las valerosas hermanas Mirabal de la República Dominicana. Las hermanas inspiraron células de resistencia en todo el país contra el régimen dictatorial del General Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. Las “mariposas”, su nombre de código secreto, fueron brutalmente asesinadas por el régimen en 1960. En el Tiempo de las Mariposas pinta un visual de la vida interior de las hermanas activistas, la belleza y ferocidad del mundo natural y la música que se escucha en la radio de la época. Realizado en español con supertítulos en Ingles. Estreno regional.

About The Director…

Julia Sosa is an El Paso, Texas-based theatre professional and alumni of University of Texas at El Paso’s Theatre and Dance Department. Julia was recently seen as the Assistant Director of Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Mojada: Una Medea in Los Angeles by Luis Alfaro. She is a songwriter and vocalist of Lunatic, a Juarez-El Paso musical project that has opened for bands like Café Tacuba, Hellow Seahore and Natalie LaFourcade. She is excited to be returning to Cleveland after serving as the Education Apprentice (2015-2016) at Cleveland Play House.

Sobre la Directora…

Julia Sosa es una profesional y alumno de la Universidad de Texas en el Departamento de danza y teatro de El Paso Texas. Julia fue directora Asistente de Oregon Shakespeare festival Mojada: Una medea en Los Angeles por Luis Alfaro. Ella es una compositora y vocalista de un projecto musical de nombre Lunatic de Juarez-El Paso-que ha habierto para bandas como Café Tacuba, Hellow Seashore y Natalie Lafourcade. Ella esta emocionada de regresar a Cleveland después de servir como el aprendiz de educación (2015-2016) en casa de obra del teatro de Cleveland.

About the rehearsals…

Rehearsals begin around January 2nd. Rehearsals are 4-5 times a week and then move to 5-6 times a week in the last few weeks. Rehearsals will be weekday evenings and weekends. Actors may be accepted with some rehearsal conflicts and limitations.
Previews February 22nd. Runs February 23rd – March 10th. Gordon Square Theatre.

Sobre Los ensayos…

Ensayos comienzan alrededor de 2 de Enero. Los ensayos son 4-5 veces a la semana y luego 5-6 veces por semana en las ultimas semanas. Ensayos serán los fines de semana y entre semana en las tardes. Actores serán aceptados con algunos conflictos y limitaciones. Los vistas previas serán el 22 de febrero. Se llevaran acabo el 23 de Febrero hasta el 10 de Marzo en Gordon Square Theatre.

• A short reading (or memorized) piece that demonstrates your acting ability
• Be ready to read sides, propose strong characters, and work with the director
• Headshot and Résumé if available

About The Playwright…

Caridad Svich is a playwright-songwriter-translator and editor. Her play Iphigenia Crash Land Falls on the Neon Shell That Was Once Her Heart (a rave fable) recently received its world premiere at 7 Stages in Atlanta. She has held an NEA/TCG Residency at the Mark Taper Forum Theatre, a TCG/Pew residency at INTAR Theatre, and has been a Radcliffe Institute fellow at Harvard University. Twelve Ophelias (a play with broken songs) was presented at Baruch Performing Arts Center in New York in March 2004, and her multimedia collaboration (with Nick Philippou & Todd Cerveris) The Booth Variations at 59 East 59th Street Theatre in August 2004. Her play Magnificent Waste was the recipient of the 2003 National Latino Playwriting Award and selected for the 2004 Tribeca Film Institute All Access Open Stage program.

Caridad Svich es una escritora-compositora-traductora y editora. Su obra Ifigenia Crash Land Cae en El Caparazón de Neón que una vez fue su Corazón (una fábula) recientemente recibió su estreno mundial en 7 etapas en Atlanta. Ella ha celebrado una residencia NEA/TCG en el teatro Mark Taper Forum, una residencia TCG/Pew en el INTAR Theatre, y ha sido Becario del Instituto Radcliffe en la Universidad de Harvard. Doce Ophelias (una obra con canciones rotas) fue presentado en el Baruch Performing Arts Center en Nueva York en marzo de 2004, y su colaboración multimedia (con Nick Philippou y Todd Cerevris) Las Variaciones de Cabina en 59 East 59 Street Theatre en agosto 2004. Su obra Magnifico Desperdicio da la 2003 fue seleccionado para el 2004 Tribeca Film institute todo acceso programa abierta.
