About the play…

A group of bickering editorial assistants at a prestigious magazine are chasing the dream – a book deal before they turn 30 and a shot at fame – when an ordinary day at the office becomes a living nightmare. The stakes for who gets the story skyrocket when crisis offers an opportunity for a career-defining moment. Inside America’s media machine, who has the right to tell whose story? Simultaneously funny and shocking, Gloria is an adrenaline rush of a show skewering the opportunistic culture of modern media.

About the process…

This rehearsal process will be conventional in nature and based in script analysis, character analysis, and emotional arch. Actors will be expected to make strong proposals, be generous, and meet deadlines given.

Rehearsals will begin on or around February 11, 2019. Rehearsals are 5-6 times a week, with evening weekday rehearsals and some daytime weekend rehearsals.

Performances begin with previews on March 22 & 23. Rehearsals will resume March 25-27. A final preview will occur on March 28, and the production opens on March 29.

Gloria runs March 22, 2019 – April 13, 2019, Thu/Fri/Sat/Mon at 7:30pm in the Gordon Square Theatre.

Important information about the play…

Gloria contains scenes of violence, including hand-to-hand combat and gun violence. These scenes will be choreographed by a professional. Weapons used on stage may include a non-firing prop gun or a block-barreled blank firing gun. All artists handling the weapons will receive appropriate training.

Auditions…

Saturday, January 5, 3-7pm & Monday, January 7, 6:30-10pm
Callbacks: will be on Saturday, January 12 at 2pm.

Auditions are by appointment only and will be scheduled in 10-minute increments. Prepared auditions will be individual, but you may be asked to stay and read with a fellow actor. Actors should plan to stay at the audition for up to 75 minutes, though you may be released sooner. Only the director, Beth Wood, will be watching the auditions.

What to prepare…

• Prepare one monologue from GLORIA provided by CPT. Memorization is NOT required.
• Optional One minute of prepared & memorized monologue of your choosing. NOTE: This material may or may not viewed as part of the audition.
• Some actors may be asked to do cold readings from sides provided by CPT at the audition.

About the Playwright:

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ plays include Neighbors (Public Theater), Appropriate (Actors Theatre of Louisville, Victory Gardens Theater, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, and Signature Theatre), An Octoroon (Soho Rep), and War. He is a Residency Five playwright at Signature Theatre and a Lila Acheson Wallace Fellow at the Juilliard School. Additionally, his work has been seen at the Vineyard Theatre, the Matrix Theatre in Los Angeles, Company One in Boston, and the HighTide Festival in the United Kingdom. He has taught at New York University and Queens University of Charlotte, and his honors include the Paula Vogel Award in Playwriting, the Helen Merrill Playwriting Award, and the inaugural Tennessee Williams Award. He holds an MA in Performance Studies.

About the Director:

Beth Wood joined the CPT staff in 2007. A director, actress, administrator, designer, educator, and theatre technician, she holds a BA in Communications and Theatre from John Carroll University. As a director of adventurous scripted work, she has been honored as a director of superior achievement by the Cleveland Critics Circle in 2016, 2015, and 2013, and has directed 16 productions, including seven world premieres and seven regional premieres, during her ten-year tenure at CPT. In 2017, Beth was selected as a finalist for the National Directing Fellowship. In addition to her directing work, Beth supports four New Play Development series that invest in outside-the-mainstream work and the artistic growth of Northeast Ohio creators. In 2016, she was awarded a TCG Leadership U[niversity] Continuing Ed grant to research long-term new play development models across the country. Beth also produces large-scale community events for CPT, including Station Hope – an annual community event featuring over 200 artists performing original work inspired by issues of freedom and justice at Cleveland’s first authenticated Underground Railroad site. Last February, Beth traveled to Iowa to direct the World Premiere of Apples in Winter by Jennifer Fawcett at Riverside Theatre in Iowa City. Her CPT directing credits include Lines in the Dust by Nikkole Salter, the NNPN Rolling World Premiere of in a word by Lauren Yee, There Is a Happiness That Morning Is by Mickle Maher, Barbecue and Antebellum by Robert O’Hara, FEVER/DREAM by Sheila Callaghan, Why Torture is Wrong and the People Who Love Them by Christopher Durang, and BOOM by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb. In addition to her work with scripted productions, Beth co-creates and directs original plays based on a comedic singing duo, The Loush Sisters, for Playhouse Square in 2011 and CPT in 2013, 2015, and 2017. Beth’s CPT acting credits include Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Mrs. Bob Cratchet’s Wild Christmas Binge, A Bright Room Called Day, Fefu and Her Friends, The Rocky Horror Show, Our Town, Pulp, Matt & Ben, Anna Bella Eema (co-production with Theater Ninjas), Open Mind Firmament, Don’t Call Me Fat, Akarui, Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays, Earth Plays (Part Two of the Elements Cycle), The Loush Sisters DO the Nutcracker, The Loush Sisters Love Dick’ns: Great Expectations, The Loush Sisters get HARD for the Holidays (Yippie-Kai-Yay Mother-Loushers), and Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play.
