About the play…
¡Este no es el cuento navideño de la abuela! Teatro Público de Cleveland blows the roof off with this Latino culture and modern music-infused take on Dickens’ classic Christmas tale. Performed in English with some songs in Spanish and Spanish subtitles. National New Play Network (NNPN) Rolling World Premiere with Milagro Theatre, Portland.
Looking to cast…
5 Women and 3 Men to play multiple roles with varying ages and personas: human, spirit, ghost, and other. For example:
- Anita Chapa, woman, 30 years old
- Tomas Chapa, man, Early 30’s
- Abuelo Chapa, father, 50’s/60’s
- Dominique, young boy, has asthma, 10 years old
- Gina, young girl, 8 years old
- Dolores Avara, woman, Late 40’s/early 50’s
- Ixchel, Spirit of Christmas Past. She’s modern and mythic. A walking full moon.
- Sol, La Chicana, Spirit of Christmas Present. The ‘hostess with the mostest.’
- La Catrina, Spirit of Christmas Future. She is mysterious, elegant, and wise.
- Joaquin, a hipster bartender, fabulous and charming.
- Chorus/Carolers
About The Process…
Rehearsals will begin in late September, 3-4 times per week and will increase in frequency in mid-October and November until opening.
AUDITIONS
Thursday, June 6th 6-9pm & Saturday, June 8th 12-3pm
CALLBACKS will be on Sunday, June 9th 2-5pm **PLEASE PLAN TO HOLD THIS DAY IN CASE YOU ARE ASKED TO CALLBACKS**
Auditions are by appointment only and will be scheduled in 10 minute slots. Actors should plan to stay at the audition for up to 60 minutes, though you may be released sooner. Auditions will be individual, but you may be asked to read with a fellow actor. The Director, Associate Director, and Music Director will be at the audition.
What to prepare…
Once you sign up for a slot, you will receive a scene from the play to prepare for your audition. Memorization is NOT required. You may be asked to read with other actors.
This is a musical and you will be asked to sing. Please prepare 30 seconds of a holiday song. The music director will also lead you through vocal scales to determine your range.

About the Playwright:
Maya Malán-González is a multidisciplinary artist focused on performing, ensemble collaboration, and writing original content. She’s an ensemble member with Teatro Luna and a lifelong member of Milagro. Maya has also worked with Cara Mia, San Diego Rep, El Teatro Campesino, Teatro Vision, and Northwest Children’s Theatre, among others. She’s performed at The Edinburg Fringe Festival (Edinburg), Fury Factory Festival (San Francisco), Carnaval of New Work (Chicago), and The Encuentro De Las Americas (Los Angeles). Maya received her BFA in Acting from The Theatre School at DePaul University.
About the Director:
Holly Holsinger is a Creator, Director, and Performer of Theatre, Playwright, Composer, and Educator, with specialization in devising new plays, and using theatre to engage, empower and educate. Cleveland Public Theatre has served as her primary artistic home for the past twenty years. Holly’s theatrical work has been seen in London, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Romania, and throughout the United States. She has shared her research with artists in Spain, Columbia, Denmark, and Ireland. Holly has been featured in Time Out New York, American Theatre magazine, Canadian Theatre Review, The Chicago Reader, The Drama Review, Theatre Forum Journal, throughout Lisa Wolford’s book Grotowski’s Objective Drama Research, and her published work in Slavic and East European Performance. Holly is an Associate Professor at Cleveland State University where she has been acknowledged with the university’s top honors for her teaching. She holds an MFA from the University of California, Irvine where she studied with Jerzy Grotowski, Robert Cohen, and Dudley Knight. She is also a certified teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework.
About the Associate Director:
Jason Estremera serves on the Board of Directors for Cleveland Public Theatre and co-chairs the Teatro Público de Cleveland leadership committee. Jason has performed in A Recipe Para La Vida, ¿Dónde Está My Home? (Where is Mi Hogar), ¡Celebrando 3 Years!, ¡OBRAS EN EVOLUCIÓN! A Festival of New Play Readings (2017, 2018), and performed in Station Hope and Pandemonium. In 2018, Jason wrote and directed his first pieces for ¡OBRAS EN EVOLUCIÓN! A Festival of New Play Readings and Pandemonium.
About the Music Director:
Maria DiDonato is an area music director/performer. She can often be found at Cleveland State University, where she has worked on Avenue Q, Company, Emotional Creature, and Violet. She is also an adjunct professor of musical theatre at the college. Maria’s other recent music directing credits include: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr. at St. Mary’s, and Lion King Jr. and Children of Eden at Cuyahoga Community College’s performing arts camp. When she isn’t music directing Maria enjoys performing in area opera and theatre productions, as a soloist for concerts, and gigging with her band Hip to That. She holds both a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education with a minor in Theatre and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Cleveland State University.
